What is Analogy?
Analogy means 'similarity' or 'correspondence'. In SSC CGL reasoning, an analogy question presents a pair of items that share a specific relationship. You must identify the same relationship in another pair and find the missing term. These questions test your ability to recognize patterns and relationships between words, letters, or numbers.
Types of Analogies
1. Word Analogies: Based on semantic relationships between words — synonym, antonym, cause-effect, part-whole, worker-tool, product-raw material, animal-young one, etc. Example: Doctor : Hospital :: Teacher : School (worker-workplace relationship).
2. Letter Analogies: Based on positional values of letters (A=1, B=2, ..., Z=26) or alphabetical patterns. Example: ACE : FHJ :: MOQ : PRT (each letter advances by 5 positions).
3. Number Analogies: Based on arithmetic operations between numbers — addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, squares, cubes, or a combination. Example: 4 : 20 :: 6 : 42 (4×5=20, 6×7=42 — multiply by consecutive odd numbers starting from 5).
