Natural Resources and Conservation

Natural resources are materials from the Earth that are used by living things for survival and well-being. They include air, water, soil, minerals, forests, sunlight, and fossil fuels. Understanding natural resources and their conservation is essential for developing environmental awareness and responsible citizenship from an early age.

Classification of Resources: Renewable resources can be replenished naturally in a short time (sunlight, air, water, wind, forests, wildlife) and are essentially inexhaustible if used sustainably. Overuse of non-renewable resources leads to depletion and environmental problems.

Water: Water covers about 71% of Earth's surface, but only 2.5% is freshwater, of which only a tiny fraction is available for human use. Sources: rivers, lakes, ponds, groundwater (wells, tube wells), and rainwater. Water is essential for drinking, agriculture, industry, and sanitation. Water conservation methods: rainwater harvesting (collecting and storing rainwater), drip irrigation (efficient farming), fixing leaks, turning off taps, and reusing water. Water pollution from industrial waste, sewage, agricultural runoff, and plastics threatens freshwater resources.

Air and Soil: Air is a mixture of gases - nitrogen (78%), oxygen (21%), carbon dioxide (0.04%), and other gases. Oxygen is essential for respiration; carbon dioxide is used by plants for photosynthesis. Air pollution is caused by vehicle emissions, factory smoke, burning of fossil fuels, and construction dust. Effects include respiratory diseases, global warming (greenhouse effect), and acid rain. Soil is formed by weathering of rocks over thousands of years. Components: minerals, organic matter (humus), water, and air. Soil conservation methods: terrace farming, contour plowing, afforestation, windbreaks, and preventing overgrazing.

Forests and Wildlife: Forests are called 'green lungs' because they produce oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide. They provide habitat for wildlife, prevent soil erosion, maintain rainfall patterns, and provide resources (timber, fuel, medicine, food). Deforestation (cutting of forests) leads to loss of biodiversity, climate change, and natural disasters. Wildlife conservation: national parks (e.g., Jim Corbett, Kanha, Kaziranga), wildlife sanctuaries, and biosphere reserves protect endangered species like the Bengal tiger, Indian rhinoceros, and Asiatic lion. The Project Tiger (1973) and Project Elephant (1992) are important conservation initiatives.

Energy Conservation: Energy from renewable sources (solar power, wind energy, hydropower, tidal energy, biomass) is clean and sustainable. Non-renewable energy (coal, petroleum, natural gas) causes pollution and is finite. Simple conservation practices: switching off lights and fans when not needed, using energy-efficient appliances (LED bulbs), using public transport, reducing, reusing, and recycling materials (3Rs).
