Key Concepts

What is Indian Economy?

Indian Economy for SSC CGL covers basic economic concepts (GDP, GNP, Inflation, National Income), the role of RBI and banking, government budgeting, taxation, economic reforms (LPG 1991), Five Year Plans, and key economic indicators.

Key Concepts

1. National Income: GDP (Gross Domestic Product — total value of goods & services produced within India), GNP (GDP + net factor income from abroad), NNP (GNP - depreciation). GDP is calculated at Market Price and Factor Cost.

2. Inflation: Sustained increase in general price level. Measured by WPI (Wholesale Price Index — base 2011-12) and CPI (Consumer Price Index — base 2012-16). CPI is used for retail inflation. Types: Demand-pull (too much money chasing too few goods) and Cost-push (rising production costs).

3. RBI (Reserve Bank of India): Central bank established in 1935 (nationalized in 1949). Functions: Monetary policy (CRR, SLR, Repo Rate, Reverse Repo Rate, Bank Rate), currency issuance, banker to government and banks, foreign exchange management.

4. Budget: Annual financial statement (Art 112). Revenue Budget (Revenue Receipts - Revenue Expenditure) and Capital Budget (Capital Receipts - Capital Expenditure). Fiscal Deficit = Total Expenditure - Total Receipts excluding borrowings.

a) Rate at which RBI lends to commercial banks against securities
b) Rate at which RBI lends to commercial banks without securities
c) Rate at which RBI borrows from commercial banks

a) 1985 b) 1991 c) 1997 d) 2000
Solution: b) 1991. In response to a severe balance of payments crisis, the government under PM Narasimha Rao and FM Manmohan Singh introduced major economic reforms — devaluation, delicensing, disinvestment, and opening to foreign investment.

Shortcut Techniques

  • For GDP calculation methods: 'PIE' — Production (value added), Income (factor incomes), Expenditure (final spending). All three should give the same GDP.
  • RBI monetary policy tools: 'CRR-SLR-Repo-RevRepo-BR-MS' — Cash Reserve Ratio, Statutory Liquidity Ratio, Repo Rate, Reverse Repo Rate, Bank Rate, Marginal Standing Facility.
  • Budget deficits hierarchy: Revenue Deficit < Fiscal Deficit < Primary Deficit. Formula: Fiscal Deficit - Interest Payments = Primary Deficit.
  • For Five Year Plans: 1st (1951-56, focus on agriculture), 2nd (Mahalanobis, heavy industry), 3rd (self-reliance), Rolling (1978-80), 12th (2012-17, faster, more inclusive, sustainable growth).
Pro Tip: Focus on RBI rates (Repo, Reverse Repo, CRR, SLR) and Budget terminology (Fiscal Deficit, Revenue Deficit). Current budget data and economic survey highlights are also frequently asked. Track changes in policy rates monthly.
