What is Verbal Ability?
Verbal Ability is a key component of the GATE General Aptitude section (15% of total marks — approximately 5 questions). It tests your command of the English language including grammar, vocabulary, sentence correction, reading comprehension, and para jumbles. Strong verbal ability is essential for all engineering branches.
Key Concepts
1. Grammar Basics: Parts of speech (noun, verb, adjective, adverb, pronoun, preposition, conjunction, interjection). Tenses — present, past, future (simple, continuous, perfect, perfect continuous). Subject-verb agreement — singular subject takes singular verb, plural subject takes plural verb. Articles (a, an, the) — 'a' before consonant sound, 'an' before vowel sound, 'the' for specific references.
2. Vocabulary: Synonyms (words with similar meanings) and Antonyms (opposite meanings). One-word substitutions (e.g., philatelist = stamp collector, ambidextrous = able to use both hands). Idioms and phrases (e.g., 'bite the bullet' = face a difficult situation, 'piece of cake' = very easy). Commonly confused words (affect/effect, complement/compliment, principal/principle).
3. Sentence Correction: Common errors include subject-verb disagreement, incorrect tense usage, wrong prepositions, misplaced modifiers, parallelism errors, and incorrect word choice. Read the full sentence, identify the error type, and check which option fixes it without changing the intended meaning.
4. Reading Comprehension: For GATE, RC passages are typically shorter (200-300 words) and focus on science, technology, or general topics. Questions test main idea, inference, vocabulary in context, and author's purpose.

Shortcut Techniques
- For sentence correction, read the sentence and first try to 'hear' what sounds wrong — your ear for grammar is often correct.
- In GATE, vocabulary questions are usually direct — eliminate obviously wrong options first (words with opposite or unrelated meanings).
- For para jumbles, look for logical connectors (however, therefore, firstly, in conclusion) to identify the first and last sentences.
- Read RC passages actively — underline the main idea in each paragraph. GATE RC questions are typically literal, not inferential.
- For idioms, memorise the 20-30 most common ones — GATE tends to repeat commonly tested idioms.
