Learning Theories in Education
Learning theories explain how knowledge is acquired, processed, and retained. For CTET teachers, understanding these theories is essential for designing effective instructional strategies. The major learning theories are grouped into three broad categories: behaviorist, cognitive, and constructivist. Each theory offers unique insights into the learning process and has practical classroom applications.
Key Concepts
Behaviorism: Focuses on observable behavior. Key proponents include Ivan Pavlov (Classical Conditioning - dog salivation experiment, stimulus-response association), B.F. Skinner (Operant Conditioning - reinforcement and punishment shape behavior, Skinner Box), and John Watson (Little Albert experiment - conditioned emotional responses). Key concepts: positive reinforcement (adding reward), negative reinforcement (removing aversive stimulus), punishment (decreasing behavior), shaping (reinforcing successive approximations), and extinction (withholding reinforcement).
Cognitivism: Focuses on internal mental processes. Key proponents include Jean Piaget (cognitive development stages, schemas), Jerome Bruner (discovery learning, spiral curriculum), David Ausubel (meaningful learning, advance organizers), and Albert Bandura (Social Learning Theory - observational learning, modeling, vicarious reinforcement). Bruner's three modes of representation: enactive (action-based), iconic (image-based), and symbolic (language-based).
Constructivism: Learners actively construct their own knowledge. Key proponents: Piaget (cognitive constructivism - individual meaning-making) and Vygotsky (social constructivism - learning through social interaction). Key concepts: prior knowledge, authentic learning tasks, collaborative learning, and scaffolding. Constructivist teaching methods include project-based learning, inquiry-based learning, and problem-based learning.
Information Processing Theory: Compares the human mind to a computer. Key concepts: sensory register (brief storage of sensory input), short-term/working memory (limited capacity, 7+2 chunks), and long-term memory (unlimited storage). Learning involves encoding, storage, and retrieval of information. Rehearsal and elaboration improve retention.
Gagne's Conditions of Learning: Robert Gagne identified five categories of learning outcomes (verbal information, intellectual skills, cognitive strategies, attitudes, motor skills) and nine events of instruction (gain attention, inform objectives, stimulate recall, present content, provide guidance, elicit performance, provide feedback, assess performance, enhance retention).

- Reinforcement vs Punishment: Reinforcement always INCREASES behavior; Punishment always DECREASES behavior. Positive = adding something, Negative = removing something. Use PN-PN: Positive adds, Negative removes.
Application in Classroom
Piaget: Sensorimotor (0-2)-sensory experiences; Preoperational (2-7)-concrete objects, pretend play; Concrete (7-11)-hands-on experiments; Formal (12+)-hypothetical thinking.
Vygotsky
ZPD: Identify what students can do with help, provide scaffolding, gradually withdraw support. MKO can be teacher, peer, or technology.
