Introduction to Puzzles & Seating Arrangement
Puzzles are the most time-consuming yet HIGHEST SCORING topic in SSC CGL Reasoning. In Tier 1, 3-5 questions appear from 1-2 puzzles. In Tier 2, 5-8 questions from 2-3 puzzles. With the RIGHT APPROACH, you can solve any puzzle in 3-5 minutes with 100% accuracy.
All Puzzle Types Asked in SSC CGL
- Type 1: Linear Arrangement (Single Row) — People in a line facing North/South. [25% of puzzles]
- Type 2: Linear Arrangement (Two Rows) — Two rows facing each other. [10%]
- Type 3: Circular Arrangement — Around a circle, all facing center. [20%]
- Type 4: Floor-Based — People living on different floors of a building. [15%]
- Type 5: Comparison/Ordering — Height, weight, age, marks ranking. [10%]

The Universal Puzzle-Solving System (5-Step Method)
This method works for ALL puzzle types. Memorize it.
- Step 1 — Read ALL clues first: Never start placing items after the first clue. Read all conditions to get the full picture.
- Step 2 — Identify DIRECT clues: "A sits at the left end" → establish immediately. "B is third to the right of C" → note relative positions.
- Step 3 — Identify NEGATIVE clues: "A is not next to B" → eliminate possibilities. "D does not live on floor 1" → note exclusions.
- Step 4 — Create a PLACEHOLDER structure: Draw the base arrangement (empty seats, floors, etc.) and start filling.
- Step 5 — Use POSSIBILITY branching: If a clue creates 2+ possibilities, track them separately. Eliminate as new clues conflict.
âš¡ Speed Trick #1: The CROSS Method
For ALL arrangement puzzles, use a CROSS (×) to mark positions that are DEFINITELY NOT occupied by a person/item. Use a TICK (✓) when a position is CONFIRMED. This visual method prevents mistakes and speeds up elimination. Draw a grid: rows = persons, columns = positions. Place × and ✓ accordingly.
âš¡ Speed Trick #2: The 'At Least' Elimination
When a clue says "A is 5 places away from B", there are 2 possibilities (A left of B or B left of A). But combine with other clues to eliminate one. The key insight: if both possibilities survive until Step 5, and you can't eliminate either, the answer is usually the one that appears in MORE options.
âš¡ Speed Trick #3: Floor Puzzle Shortcut
For floor puzzles (5-8 floors), list floors as 1 (bottom) to 8 (top). Then USE POSITION NUMBERS: "A lives 3 floors above B" → if B is at floor x, A is at x+3. "C lives 2 floors below D" → if D is at floor y, C is at y-2. This mathematical approach is faster than drawing diagrams.
⚡ Speed Trick #4: Circular Arrangement — The Clock Method
For circular arrangements, always place the FIRST person at the TOP (12 o'clock position). Then: "To the right" = clockwise. "To the left" = anticlockwise. Number positions 1 to 8 clockwise. This eliminates confusion about direction. For "facing center", left = clockwise. For "facing outward", left = anticlockwise.

For complex puzzles, draw a TABLE with persons as rows and positions as columns. Mark ✓ when possible, ✗ when impossible. Example: for floor puzzle, rows=persons, columns=floors 1-7. Start with definite clues (R=4). Then mark ✗ for impossibilities from each clue. When a row has only one ✓, that's the answer for that person.

Six persons A, B, C, D, E, F sit around a circular table facing the center.
1. A sits second to the left of C.
2. B sits third to the right of D.

Common Mistakes (15 Mistakes)
- Mistake 1: Not reading ALL clues before starting — leads to wrong assumptions.
- Mistake 2: Confusing left/right in circular arrangements (clockwise vs anticlockwise).
- Mistake 3: Forgetting that "immediate left" means directly adjacent.
- Mistake 4: Miscounting positions: "third to the right" = count 3 positions away, not including the starting position.
- Mistake 5: Not tracking multiple possibilities — leads to dead ends without backup.
- Mistake 6: Spending >5 minutes on one puzzle — if stuck, guess and move on.
- Mistake 7: Forgetting that "A is between B and C" doesn't specify order (B-A-C or C-A-B).

In SSC CGL Tier 1, you'll get 1-2 puzzles. The first puzzle is usually LINEAR or CIRCULAR (easier, solve in 2-3 min). The second is COMPARISON or FLOOR-based (moderate, solve in 3-4 min). Attempt the easier one first. If a puzzle has 5+ conditions and you can't solve in 4 min, mark answers logically and move on.
