🌍 Overview & the Diglossia Trap

• Family: Afro-Asiatic → Semitic (cousin of Hebrew, Amharic, Aramaic).
• Speakers: ~310 M native across 25+ countries — but read on, because "Arabic" is two languages at once.
• MSA (Modern Standard Arabic, فصحى): the written, broadcast, formal language you learn in class. Nobody speaks it at home.
• Dialects (عامية): Egyptian, Levantine, Gulf, Maghrebi... the real everyday spoken languages. A Moroccan and an Iraqi can struggle to understand each other.
• The strategy: learn MSA for literacy, then pick one dialect for speaking (Egyptian is the most understood everywhere).

✍️ The Script — an abjad, written RTL

Arabic has 28 consonants and only 3 long vowels written as letters; short vowels are optional marks above/below. It's an abjad — you know a word from its consonants.

Letters connect: letters join their neighbors in words — ب ا ب → باب (bāb, door) — with a standalone, initial, medial, and final form each.

🌱 The Triliteral Root System — Arabic's superpower

Most words come from a 3-consonant root slotted into vowel patterns. From the root كتب (k-t-b), "to write":

Learn a root and you get a whole family of words for free. Hebrew works exactly the same way — that shared mechanism is your Semitic fast-pass.

🧩 Grammar Essentials

VSO and no verb "to be" in the present

kataba l-waladu kitāban — "wrote the-boy a-book." Verb–Subject–Object, with the verb marked for the subject's gender. "The boy is tall" = just l-waladu ṭawīl (boy tall) — no copula needed.

Three cases, three moods

Nominative (ُ -u), accusative (َ -a), genitive (ِ -i) — the short vowels you usually don't write. Verbs flip between indicative, subjunctive, and jussive.

Definite article + "sun letters"

ال al- attaches: al-kitāb. Before certain consonants it swallows the L: ash-shams (الشمس, the sun), an-nūr (النور, the light).

Gender everywhere

Nouns, verbs, adjectives, even numbers mark masculine vs. feminine. kataba (he wrote) vs. katabat (she wrote).

Plurals are broken (on purpose)

Regular plurals exist, but "broken plurals" change the word's insides: kitāb → kutub (books). It's a puzzle you learn by feel.

🔢 Numbers (MSA)

20 = عشرون ʿishrūn, 100 = مئة miʾa, 1000 = ألف alf. And yes — the gender of numbers 3–10 matches the noun's gender, which is why your teacher apologizes a lot.

• Arabic is a liturgical language for 2 B people — Quranic Arabic (fusḥā) has stayed understandable for 1,400 years.
• One of the UN's six official languages; Latin's "algebra", "zero", and "algorithm" all come from Arabic roots.
• Inscriptional heritage: Arabic gave the world the number system you type with — Western digits are "Arabic numerals" that traveled through Al-Andalus.
• Learn the ʿayn before you speak: ʿ (ع) is the hallmark throat consonant foreigners fear. Shape it like a gagged "a" and practice daily.
• Diacritics are training wheels: newspapers drop the short-vowel marks; children's books and the Quran keep them. You'll read MSA without them within a year.
• Roots are shared: سلام salām (peace) grows salām, islām, muslim, salāmah — one root, one giant family of meanings.
